The Filosofou Monastery, the Lady of the Gorge
South
of mountainous village of Dimitsana in a magical gorge flowed through the
famous Lousios river, is one of the most historic monasteries of Peloponnese
and all Greece, the Holy Monastery of Filosofou. It is consisted
of two building complexes, the old monastery, also called the ‘’Secret school’’ and the new one, both on the right side of Lousios gorge. The ‘’Secret school’’ is built inside a cave of about 130m. and width from 0.50 to 8m. hanging from a cliff of 500m. altitude.
It is estimated to been founded around 936-967 AD. by John Lampardopoulos and has been declared as an architectural masterpiece. During the Ottoman occupation the old monastery functioned as a ‘’secret school’’ and the area became an intellectual and learning center. The new Filosofou monastery was founded in the 17th century (1691 AD.) at a distance of about four hundred meters from the old one in smoother position.
Today the new monastery has been renovated and many exceptional arts of frescoes of the 17th century have been preserved, samples of its rich cultural heritage. A visit to these two hidden cultural treasures will definitely take you a trip back to the past and offer you a unique experience.
